National Grandparents Day Council Recognizes the Houston Police Department
Grandparents Outreach Program
September 9, 1999

The National Grandparents Day Council salutes the outstanding program developed
by the Houston Police Department to recognize grandparents. On September
9th, the department hosts an annual luncheon to celebrate the contribution
that grandparents make in molding their grandchildren to be assets to society.
The department recognizes the great source of stability, wisdom and positive
influence that grandparents represent to their grandchildren.
Approximately 600 participants representing every ethnic group are invited
to a delicious meal, the opportunity to meet the Chief of Police, Assistant
Chiefs, Captians and City Council members, not to mention the door prizes
and a bag filled with a varity of useful items.
Tom McQuade, son of the founder of National Grandparents Day,
will present an award to the Houston Police and will challenge police
departments in cities across the United States to initiate grandparent
outreach programs similar to that of the Houston Police Department.
